Most Common Causes of Slip and Fall Accidents

If you or a loved one has ever taken a tumble or accidental fall, or you are worried about it happening, grab some coffee and take a few minutes to read about the common reasons those accidents can happen. Slip and fall accidents are a common occurrence which causes upset and personal injury. Not only that, but the cost of such accidents on average can be over $20,000 to you personally. Hospitals around the country agree that no one is immune to a slip, trip or fall, and they are the leading cause of injury for all age groups.

Caution:Wet Surface!

According to the Canadian Center for Occupational Health and Safety, “Slips happen where there is too little friction or traction between the footwear and the walking surface.” Slipping while you are shopping, or walking from the parking lot into a restaurant with your family can happen because of weather hazards like rain and puddling, oily surfaces from other vehicles and large truck deliveries in the area, and the occasional accidental spill near a doorway. If you happen to be entering a business after a spill just happened, employees may not have been made aware of the issue and proper signs of cautions may not have been placed. Walking through parking lots often make you or your loved ones vulnerable to potholes holding water, which are more difficult to notice.

Uneven Ground makes for Unsteady Walking

The many different places a person visits in a given day all try to design their buildings and entrances in inviting ways and therefore make visually appealing choices so that people are drawn in and feeling welcomed. Because of this, often there are different types of walking paths--or none at all--leading up to a doorway which are made of many different colors and styles of concrete and stone. Some pavers have space in between them which require proper placement and levelling with paver base and sand between to make the walking surface safe for everyone. Cobblestone pathways and smooth looking slate are beautiful aesthetics to add to a storefront but can cause serious injury and upset to a patron. The absence of handrails and benches are also an issue with uneven ground. Benches don’t sit level on textured concrete, and there aren’t always places to mount handrails for walking support.

Lighting and Debris--I Can’t Even See!

Daytime and nighttime outdoor lighting has most often been tailored to people driving vehicles rather than pedestrians. Lighting inside is often chosen based on showcasing products and creating atmosphere, rather than maintaining visible footing to get from point A to point B.

In cars and trucks, drivers have the added shield for glare from the roof of the vehicle, but while walking around in public places, their lines of vision are more varied as they pay attention to their surroundings. If lights are mounted too high and create lots of glare on polished floors, trips and falls can happen in shocking ways. A child may be focused on how the shiny lights look on tiles and miss a step. An elderly person may find that walking all the way back through the different sections of a department store invites fatigue and disorientation. In cases such as this, unavoidable injuries happen.

It is important that when walking you are aware of your surroundings and are in tune with your own needs. Proper footwear and lines of sight are important to be aware of, and in case of slips, trips, and falls, it is important that you let the property manager know what happened and how. These most common causes of personal injury are important to stay aware of while going about your busy day.
